Superhero Sequel Updates: 'Thor 2,' 'Captain America 2,' 'Black Widow' and The Hulk

With The Avengers ready to assemble later this week, thereâs no better time than the present to start talking about all of the upcoming sequels on Marvel Filmsâ docket â" and luckily enough, the folks whoâre up close and personal with those very projects have been pretty open about what the comics giant has in store for us in the not too distant future. Read on for the full skinny.
Thor 2
MTV recently caught up with the God of Thunder himself, Chris Hemsworth, who shed some light on Thor 2 â" mostly about what he hopes director Alan Taylor will bring to the table.
Hemsworth hopes the Game of Thrones co-creator will bring some of that showâs âmagical realismâ to the world of Asgard in the upcoming sequel. He tells MTV â[Game of Thrones] had a real mythical element to it, but it was rooted in such an organic and tangible world. I think Asgard could really benefit from that sort of a grittier, aged feel to it and not so ethereal. The big thing about the comics for me was the origin story. Thor was interesting, but what I found more fascinating was the other worlds and realms that you can be taken off into."
We agree with Hemsworthâs assessment. Asgard could benefit from Game of Thronesâ gritty sense of magical realism. That being said, donât hold your breath on the showâs copious sex, violence, and nudity making the jump. Something tells us Marvelâs not down with that. [via Blastr]
Black Widow
Meanwhile, Marvel boss Kevin Feige is once again doling out intriguing bits of info about future projects that arenât officially on the upcoming releases list â" today, he tells Movieline about the studioâs plans for Scarlett Johannsonâs Black Widow character.
âI think people are going to be surprised by how powerful Scarlett is in this movie, and how evolved her role is. We have already planned her next appearances and where to take that character because we believe in it and we believe in her in a big, big way. When will there be a standalone? Both is what we're heading toward.â
He goes on to add that while a Black Widow standalone film is certainly in the cards at some point, expect more appearances from the character in other films in the interim.
âWe do like when some of the characters appear in other people's movies.â He then continues, âand that's probably where you'll see Black Widow next.â
Captain America 2
Feige wasnât done there, though â" he had time to dish on the evolution of Captain America 2 as well.
âCap's in the modern day now. So if we looked at war movies from the '40s as our inspiration for the first Cap, the next one we're looking at very different movies, very different inspiration. So it will almost be a different genre of film, which I've never seen before in a sequel.â
Itâs a risky move for sure â" but if thereâs a character in all of comics who can pull it off, itâs probably Captain America. [via io9]
The Hulk
Finally, Collider caught up with actor Mark Ruffalo (who plays The Incredible Hulk in The Avengers) recently, and the performer announced that heâs signed a six-picture deal with Marvel. This not only means weâre likely to be seeing more Hulk cameos in upcoming Marvel movies, but it also seems likely that another standalone Hulk film will be coming our way at some future date.
For whatever reason, Marvelâs had issues in bringing the Green Goliath to the screen. Two previous attempts, one directed by Ang Lee and the other with Ed Norton in the lead role, never took off in the way the studio hoped. Perhaps the third timeâs the charm? Early reports say that Ruffalo is great as the character, so maybe Marvel has finally found the winning combo. Letâs hope so â" Hulk is an awesome character who deserves his own franchise.
