Cine Latino: Gael GarcÃa Bernal Brings a 'Bit of Heaven'; Demián Bichir is âTrappedâ; No Cinco de Mayo for Eugenio Derbez?

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday. Â
For loyal Gael GarcÃa Bernal fans, his latest film A Little Bit of Heaven with Kate Hudson will most likely be a must see movie this weekend. The Mexican actor plays a doctor whose patient (Hudson) is diagnosed with cancer. As any romance story would have it the two unexpectedly fall in love. Click here to witness their first encounter.
Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to chat with Mexican comedian actor Eugenio Derbez about Cinco de Mayo and his upcoming film with Eva Mendes Girl in Progress, look out for the full interview next Friday. The actor, who just recently appeared in Adam Sandlerâs Jack and Jill, was stumped when I asked what the best way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo is.
âItâs weird because we donât celebrate Cinco de Mayo [in Mexico]. [Laughs] In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is like nothing. We won a battle against France. It was a small battle with a small army. Our big fiesta in Mexico is on September 16, our independence day. Itâs huge there. Itâs the opposite here. Cinco de Mayo is huge here,â said Derbez.
Cinco de Mayo is observed in the United States on May 5 as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. It also commemorates the Mexican armyâs unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1982. Cinco de Mayo isnât Mexicoâs Independence Day, which is actually celebrated, as Derbez commented, on September 16.
So what does Derbez recommend, even though he doesnât celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
âI donât drink. I donât smoke. I donât party. Iâm so boring,â said Derbez chuckling. âI love good restaurants. I would recommend for people to go to a Mexican restaurant and order tamales, flan and crepas con cajeta and dulce de leche. I love them.â
Oscar nominee Demián Bichir is experiencing a muy bueno life after A Better Life. According to Variety, Bichir has been approached to star in William Friedkinâs indie thriller Trapped as an Israeli operative.
Heâs currently in negotiations to join Robert Rodriguezâs Machete Kills, the sequel to Machete (2010). Heâll be joining Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez, who confirmed earlier this week sheâll be reprising her role as Luz/She. Last year Oliver Stone cast Bichir alongside Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek in the upcoming drug drama Savages, in theaters July 6.
