TVs get smart for 2012 with voice and motion control
While 3D enabled TVs have been grabbing most of the audio visual headlines of late, smart features and built in connectivity have the potential to create more far reaching changes to our viewing habits.
Judging by some of the products at this years CES (consumer electronics show) in Las Vegas, it looks like manufacturers have recognized that the interface to all of their smart features is just as important as the features themselves.
Its no longer good enough to create a wi-fi connection to the Web and provide users with a rudimentary browser; consumers now want to search quickly and easily for content on the TV, DLNA certified connected media storage, networked PCs, mobile devices and the Internet.
With the looming threat of Apple's voice activated control technology TV manufacturers don't want to get caught out by a rumored update to the Apple TV product. An immediately recognizable theme running through some of the more innovative TVs at CES is voice and motion control.
LG and Samsung in particular are taking full advantage of dual core processing technology to furnish their TVs with state of the art control features.
Samsung's flagship ES8000 LED TV is being billed as the product that will "listen, see and do what you want" without the viewer having to go anywhere near a remote.
Enhanced processing power will give users the convenience of switching between TV, web browser or applications without having to shut down any of those functions.
The really exciting aspect of this new technology is centered around the TV controls. A built-in camera uses facial recognition to automatically log users into their personal profiles. They can then issue voice commands such as "Channel 4" or "TV Guide" etc. They will also be able to use gesture controls for Web browsing, media playback and more.
LG are developing their magic wand concept with a built-in microphone. This will allow users to make voice updates on applications like Twitter.
While there is along way to go to create that truly integrated home entertainment hub experience through your TV; it looks like the big manufacturers see enough potential in the concept to invest the resources required to refine the technology further.
While the idea will have always have been at the back of their minds they are now seeing the control over a large chunk of the household entertainment schedule as a realistic goal; and one that could potentially bear great riches ....
